On 21 February 2023, our Glasgow Police Museum loaned an old Glasgow Police cap to the Victoria & Albert Museum in Dundee for their forthcoming ‘Tartan’ Exhibition which opens on 1 April 2023 and continues until 14 January 2024.

Our Curator, Alastair Dinsmor MBE met with two members of the V & A staff, James Wylie (assistant curator) and Elliot George (marketing officer) when Alastair handed the cap over to them for display.

The connection of the cap to the exhibition is of course the ‘Sillitoe Tartan’ cap band which was instituted by Chief Constable Sir Percy Sillitoe in 1932 and worn first by members of The City of Glasgow Police. See policemuseum.org.uk/glasgow-police-history/20th-century/sillitoe-tartan/

If you are in Dundee this summer, have a look at the ‘Tartan’ Exhibition. I have been told it is very interesting.
